In Remembrance of Dr. Mark Edgar

The Peter Bullough Foundation would like to share the news of the sudden and devastating loss of our friend and board member, Dr. Mark Edgar in February of this year. Dr. Edgar was chosen for the board of the Peter Bullough Foundation by Dr. Bullough himself; he served as a trustee from its inception in 2018 through his untimely death in February of 2025. Dr. Bullough and Dr. Edgar had much in common, both dedicated physicians and pathologists who were fascinated by and deeply appreciated the world around them. Dr. Bullough admired and thought incredibly highly of Dr. Edgar.Â
Dr. Edgar served as the PBF’s first and only Residency Chair, helping to define and refine the residency program’s focus and its selection process over the last 4 years. From the program’s outset, he had a clear-eyed vision of how the PBF could support artists, particularly LGBTQ+ artists. This goal laid the foundation for the residency program and has remained unchanged over the last 5 years.Â
Since 2021, the PBF has hosted 8 rounds of residents totaling nearly 100 different artists and Dr. Edgar dedicated his valuable time adjudicating all rounds but one. He was a steady and thoughtful presence on the board, contributing his carefully considered answers, often with a wry smile and always with a deep sense of humanity and humor. His efforts deeply impacted the course of the PBF and the artists who have been residents here. We are so grateful for his unwavering support and for his time and talent in building and shaping the PBF and send our deepest condolences to his husband and partner Cristian and his family, friends, and colleagues. Thank you so much for everything, Mark.
